It's like wildlife photography. You go out in the Land Rover to film lions killing a zebra. Waiting, waiting, waiting, nothing, nothing, nothing. Lions are even dozing around your Land Rover. Then, suddenly, the females (they do most of the hunting) are wrestling a wildebeest to the ground. You got what you came for: lions bringing home a meal to the pride.

Same with train photography. The Holiday Train was scheduled to arrive on the Milwaukee District North at Union Station November 30 at 1:22pm. No train. But I could not have asked for a better shot than the one at 4:08 -- TWO trains boiling out of the station at just about the same time! And I was not expecting a cameo appearance by Amtrak at 1:02 (the several-times-a-day Hiawatha, I think.) So, the Holiday Train would have to wait till 4:45pm. In the meantime, I chilled, read and nursed a cup of coffee at the local McDonald's.
