Interview with Tonmeister Carsten Kümmel • Recording of the Göttinger Symphonie Orchester

Carsten Kümmel is an exceptional Tonmeister and live sound engineer. Last year he mixed major live productions such as “The World of Hans Zimmer”, BBC “Planet Earth II” or the Anne-Sophie Mutter concert “Accros the Stars” concert in Munich with conductor David Newman.

This year everything is different, of course. No touring, no big audiences. With the Göttinger Symphonie Orchester under the direction of Nicholas Milton, Kümmel is recording a fine selection of exquisite pieces, as the orchestra couldn't perform due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Among other, the orchestra played the highly emotional piece Symphony No. 9 by Dvořák.

Kümmel shows EventElevator his working methods, which he had to change due to the Corona virus regulations. He explains his selected microphone types and the positioning as well as his workflow on the Avid VENUE | S6L mixing console.

Even the recording place in Göttingen is pretty unusual. It takes place at the LOKHALLE, a former industrial building that has been converted to a unique concert environment.
