Various new materials are being created every day to be utilized in engineering disciplines. However, these new materials have mechanical properties which need to be discovered and quantified. This project focused on creating a machine, such that a specific set of materials may be tested under low-velocity impacts. The Impact Tester is able to perform projectile impacts on various material specimens at given speeds and angles with a ball bearing type projectile. The material is marked such that a reference map can be generated and high-speed cameras are used to capture the impact in slow motion to reveal the impact propagation. The Impact Tester also has force sensors that measure the amount of force transferred through the projectile. The UCF Materials Science and Engineering Department will be able to utilize this mechanical tester for further exploration and research into material design. A discipline of engineering which has much left to be discovered. (MAE)
