Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, has expressed concern that her husband will not receive justice after being detained and brought to a military court. Besigye, a longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni, was forcibly taken from Kenya earlier this month, a move that both Amnesty International and Kenya’s foreign ministry have described as an abduction.

Byanyima, who is also the Executive Director of UNAIDS, believes the charges against Besigye, including illegal possession of firearms, are politically motivated. She stated that the military court offers little hope for fairness, adding that the incident is part of a broader effort to silence the opposition and undermine democracy in Uganda. She further claimed that Ugandan operatives were behind the abduction, despite the abductions appearing to involve individuals pretending to be Kenyan.

Uganda’s government has not provided details on the case but maintains that arrests abroad are made in coordination with host nations. The country’s military spokesperson has rejected claims that the trial is politically driven, asserting that the court will follow the law
