Relative deprivation is a sense of being “worse off” in general than the people you identify with and compare yourself to. For example, when you can only afford a compact economy car, but your co-worker drives a fancy luxury car while getting the same salary as you, you can feel relatively deprived.

Deprivation theory means that people who are deprived of things deemed valuable in society whether money, justice, status, or privilege, join social movements with the hope to redress their grievances.
