Some facts.
Currently, the fauna includes representatives of the order of pinnipeds - monk seals, which belong to a very rare, almost endangered species. Their native element is the sea.
This species is called a monk because of its adherence to a special, “monastic” way of existence.
What does it look like
Animals have characteristic features:
The skull has wide zygomatic arches and an expanded nasal region.
Powerfully developed posterior lower jaw.
The presence of 32 massive teeth, eight on each side of both jaws.
Hind flippers framed by a deep median notch, wide blades with small claws.
The front flippers have 5 fingers. The longest is the first, the others gradually decrease in length towards the last.
Framed with developed, wide claws.
Body covered with hard, tight-fitting hair.
The upper lip has elongated, smooth whiskers.
In mammals, the toes on the hind limbs do not bend forward to support the wavy, narrowed shape of the body when moving on the ground or ice cover. In water they are used as propulsion organs for swimming.
The body reaches three meters in length and weighs about 300 kg. It ends in a small, round head without ears. The narrowed muzzle and body are connected by a small, almost motionless neck.
The body is covered with short, shiny brownish-brown hair. The back is dark gray and blackish-brown, the belly is slightly lighter. After the birth of the baby, shedding begins with hair loss.
Varieties
Monk seals are classified into: the class of mammals, the order of carnivores, the suborder of Canidae, and the family of true seals. The following types of animals are available:
Mediterranean (White-bellied)
They are distinguished by a short, wide and flat muzzle, with pronounced long nostrils located upward. The short flippers have thin claws.
The body build is ideal for catching fish, octopus, lobsters, and squid in deep sea coral beds. The hair of males is black, differs from females with a brownish or grayish color.
The cubs are up to one meter long and weigh no more than 18 kg. The skin is covered with dark, black hair. The belly is colored by a light stripe, by which you can determine the gender of the puppy. After two months, the coat changes to short hair, identical to adult individuals.
What does it eat?
The animals hunt for cephalopods and crustaceans, and bony fish that live on the reef. It is easier for young animals to catch octopuses and eels.
Preference is given to small and large fish (anchovy, horse mackerel, flounder, markel), and large crustaceans. Food is easily obtained in large quantities due to exceptional mobility. The fillets are eaten, the heads and tails are left behind.
Large pieces are torn off from the fish and swallowed without chewing. Digging in the sea soil, they look for various types of crabs and mollusks using tactile whiskers-vibrissae.
Gastrolith stones, which animals swallow, help process food. The pebbles in the stomach help to crush and grind food.
The main diet of white-bellied individuals is flounder; they also do not refuse mackerel and anchovies. They feed at a depth of 45 to 70 meters; they also eat octopus, squid, and eels.
Where does it live?
Monk seals live in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. Most of them are located in the north and west of the archipelago. The main habitats are cliffs near the coast.
They spend most of their lives at sea. They are often seen in areas where coral reefs form, where there is plenty of food for them.
Habitat of existence of white-bellied seals:
Atlantic coast;
Regions of Southern Europe and Northern Africa;
Mediterranean and Black Sea.
Previously, their presence was noted in the Crimea, in the rocky grottoes of Tarkhankut. Settlements most often lived in karst caves with underwater sea entrances
Monk seals descend to three hundred meters depth for food.
Natural enemies
The main enemies are people and their professional activities. Great damage to the population was caused by fishermen, who destroyed them due to breaks in their fishing nets. Animals also died when caught in fishing nets and equipment; it was impossible to survive in such a situation.
They end up in discarded debris and eat fish waste, which also leads to death. In addition to human activity, large marine animals pose a threat to them; they die in the teeth of tiger, great white and Galapagos sharks.
