Eran is a small village situated at the south bank of river Bina in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh. It is surrounded on three sides by this river. Mandi Bamora (Railway station) is the nearest big town. Eran is referred as Erakina or Erakanya in epigraphs and coins and seems to have held an important position in olden times. There are remains of four-five temples mainly Varaha Temple, Vishnu Temple & Narasimha Temple. At complex entrance, Garuda Pillar (Garuda stambha) is placed on a pedestal. Total height of the Pillar is 43 feet which include 5 feet high Garuda statues on top of the Pillar. Garuda-dhwaja was the royal emblem of the Guptas. This sandstone pillar was setup by two brothers, Matri Vishnu and Dhanya Vishnu, in the reign of the Gupta emperor Budhagupta (as per Pillar inscription of Budhagupta). Varaha Temple – This Varaha is eminent feature of this complex. It is about 14 feet long, 5 feet broad and 11 feet high. It was setup by Dhanya Vishnu, same person who is mentioned in the inscription of the pillar above. Whole body of the Varaha is covered with miniature sculptures of various gods, sages and 27 Nakshatra Garland. Bhu-devi is shown hanging to his tusk. Vishnu Temple – An image of Vishnu, 13 feet high, is placed inside the sanctum of this temple. The sanctum doorway is elaborately carved with River goddesses and Dwarpalas. Narasimha Temple – A damaged statue of Narasimha is put on the plinth. It would have been a 7 feet high statue in its original glory. At present this statute is in two pieces, feet and body separate.
