Like many other states, Hawaii is in a period of significant growth - a situation that’s projected to extend well into the future. Like just about everywhere else, finding and training a core of skilled electricians to do the work is something that is a high priority of the island’s NECA/IBEW Powering America Team. This is the driving force behind a new union hall/ trust fund office for Local 1186, as well as a new training center that will graduate thousands of NECA/IBEW-qualified electricians in the years to come.

The finishing touches are being put on the new union hall now, and are well on their way to beginning classroom renovations for the new training center. Beyond the need to update the design, IBEW Local 1186 had outgrown the space they used for training as their apprenticeship numbers grew. This new JATC training center will feature 12 new classrooms and 2 new labs. Capacity will now be more than double - creating space for new apprentices to get the high-quality education they require to be the best electricians in the world.

This training center is one of many new entities enticing the younger generation to join the trades, especially with IBEW’s benefits and program perks. Perhaps the most interesting design element is a micro-grid and battery backup system with a rooftop solar array that will allow the building to generate and store energy while being completely off the grid.

The NECA/IBEW Powering America team in Hawaii, and across America, are dedicated to training the best electricians in the world, for today’s construction environment, as well as the future. Watch now on ETV!
