Kashibai hailed from a small village called Chaskaman, which is located just 70 kilometers away from Pune, and was fondly called Laadubai by her parents. She came from a wealthy family, and her father’s name was Mahadji Krishna Joshi, who was a sahukar as well as the subedar of the Maratha empire in Kalyan, thus making him quite influential.

Kashibai married Bajirao in 1711 when she was just eight years old, and Bajirao was 11 years old. Historians believe that Bajirao treated his wife with utmost love and respect, and they both had a happy married life. Kashibai also used to be in charge of the day-to-day business of the empire, especially in Poona when Bajirao was away on the battlefield. Kashibai and Bajirao had three sons, Nana Saheb, who was also called Balaji Baji Rao, Rahunath Rao, and Janardhan Rao Unfortunately, not much is known about their younger son because he died at a very young age.

Even though Kashibai did not like the fact that Bajirao fell in love with Mastani, she never did anything to hurt or disrespect her.

According to folklore, Kashibai immersed herself in religious activities after she became a widow. She would often perform elaborate religious ceremonies and even stayed in Banaras for four years. She had a huge following, too, and in one such religious tour that she took, she was accompanied by over 10,000 pilgrims. She even commissioned a huge temple for Lord Shiva in her hometown, which is popularly called the Someshwar Temple today.

Kashibai was even ready to accept Mastani as a part of the family, but since she did not want to go against the wish and will of her mother-in-law and brother-in-law Chimaji Appa, she couldn’t do so. Furthermore, in the 18th century, households were extremely patriarchal, and women did not hold any right to comment on important matters. Unfortunately, Kashibai was no different. She was a woman with a golden heart.
