Fences were a vital part of 19th Century life. They also played a major, sometimes pivotal, role in combat, occasionally changing the course of history. The most infamous example being the post and rail fence that stood along the Emmitsburg Road at the Battle of Gettysburg. The photos taken shortly after the Battle of Antietam of the dead along the fence bordering the Hagerstown Pike are some of the best documentation we have of the typical fence of the 19th Century. Few things are as overlooked and misrepresented as the typical post and rail fence of the period. From movies to historic sites, post and rail fences are always portrayed by our modern equivalents: pressure treated mass produced garbage.

This particular fence was constructed with the objective of adding authentic post and rail fences to my product line. When I revisit this subject, I’ll show how these fences were made using only period tools and techniques.
