In this video tutorial I will show you how to route an external source in Ableton Live to trigger Neutron's Dynamic EQ SideChain function.

Get Neutron -- PIB/Neutron

Get the Samples -- LeonSwitch/DarkDubstep

First, you will need to have Neutron. I will be using the masking feature to help me figure out where to add the dynamic eq node. In the video I will be using an instance of the "mothership" and an instance of the EQ module. The EQ module is only available in the Neutron Advanced package, so if you only have the basic set up, just use the mothership instead.

For simplicity I only have 3 tracks.

Track 1 - Drum Loop
Track 2 - Drum Loop (identical to track 1)
Track 3 - Bass Loop
Add the Neutron mothership to track 3 and the Neutron EQ module to track 2.

Then, expand the I/O panel in Live. In the Output section of track one choose Track 3 and then from the second drop down menu make sure Neutron is selected. Now, when you play all 3 tracks you should only hear audio from track 2 and 3.

Next, jump into the Neutron mothership on the bass track. You can run the track assistant now, if you want, but it isn't necessary for this tutorial.

Activate the masking function and choose the Drum EQ module from the drop down menu. Then play the track. You will notice some pink columns pop up along the top of the EQ. Those are places where there are frequency conflicts or "masking".

Adjust the gain and the Q for the node until you hear the desired effect when the kick drum is hitting. Don't worry about the rest of the time, because when we add the dynamic EQ that part will be left unaffected.

Masking Feature - Discover where to add the Dynamic EQ node
Activate a new EQ node and move it to the area in the low/sub end with the highest masking peak. Then activate the Dynamic EQ option for the node. Also, activate the Sidechain feature. From the drop down box choose the Ext. All option or another type if you prefer.

Now you can adjust threshold of the Dynamic EQ's compressor until it sounds best! That's it.
