The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf is finally here, and the company loads the hatchback with cutting-edge technology. Production begins in Germany in December. Pricing and a launch date for the United States aren't yet available. VW plans to bring the new GTI and R to the U.S, but the company is still considering whether to sell the Golf in America.

The new Golf looks familiar, but its more slippery than ever with a drag coefficient of 0.275. The overall footprint grows slightly to a total length of 168.7 inches (4,284 millimeters) from 167.6 inches (4,258 mm) for the existing model. Width decreases slightly to 70.43 inches (1,789 mm) versus 70.8 inches (1,799 mm) for the seventh generation. The wheelbase remains nearly identical at 103.8 inches (2,636 mm) rather than 2,637 mm currently.

On the inside, the eighth-gen Golf comes standard with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.25-inch infotainment system display. A 10-inch infotainment screen is also available. People with compatible Samsung smartphones can set them up as the vehicle's key. With this feature, waving the phone near the door unlocks it and putting the phone in the center console starts the engine

The Golf launches with five hybrid powertrains. Three of them use 48-volt mild-hybrid systems, and they produce 109 horsepower (81 kilowatts), 129 hp (96 kW), and 148 hp (110 kW). There are also two plug-in hybrids with 13-kilowatt-hour batteries that offer 201 hp (150 kW) and 241 hp (180 kW).

There are also two tunes of a 1.0-liter turbo three-cylinder gasoline-fueled engine making 89 hp (66 kW) and 109 hp (81 kW) and two versions of a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder offering 114 hp (85 kW) and 148 hp (110 kW). The diesel-fueled, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes in versions producing 114 hp (85 kW) and 148 hp (110 kW).

The new Golf's available Travel Assist driver assistance tech can handle the steering, brake, and acceleration on highways at speeds up to 131 miles per hour (210 kilometers per hour). The vehicle can take advantage of Car2X communications to trade info with other vehicles and roadside infrastructure within a 2,625-foot (800-meter) radius.

For the first time, Golf buyers can add features to the car after purchasing it. The company's We Upgrade program lets a customer add the adaptive cruise control, Light Assist headlight controls, navigation, smartphone app integration, and Wi-Fi hotspot even after taking delivery of the vehicle.
