A common refrain from Muslims and Christians about atheists like myself: “If you’re not worshipping God, you’re still worshipping something.”
They'll say atheists worship harmful gods like the God of Hedonism—by pursuing pleasure in things like sex, drugs and alcohol. Or the God of materialism—by making as much money as possible so we can buy more stuff we don’t need.
Here’s the thing: calling those things Gods isn't accurate, but otherwise, those religious people are completely right.
But are Islam and Christianity the antidotes for those atheists? Or could there be a third path: one without any gods, literal or metaphorical?
