On today’s podcast, Ashley Thompson and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Ashley tells listeners what they will hear.
00:54 First, Mario reports on Typhoon Yagi. The powerful ocean storm is blamed for many deaths in Vietnam’s north. The storm struck the country’s manufacturing centers, especially ones where foreign companies have operations. State media said 5.7 million people were without power over the weekend. A major bridge over the Red River collapsed sending cars and trucks into the flooded river. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
06:10 Then, Jill Robbins presents the Health & Lifestyle Report. This week, we hear about kinds of food that are made through industrial processes that cannot be done at home. They are called ultraprocessed foods. The report says ultraprocessed foods make up much of the U.S. food supply and most Americans eat some every day. The foods are high in salt, sugar and fat. They are blamed for many poor health effects from obesity and diabetes to heart disease, depression, dementia and early death. Experts say, to make it harder for people to eat these foods, ultraprocessed foods should be taxed more or rules should be passed to control what is put in them. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
12:26 Following that, Jill and Ashley discuss what the prefix “ultra” means. Jill says it describes something that is extreme, and it appear in a number of words, such as “ultramodern.”

14:54 Finally, Andrew Smith and Jill use Lesson 13 of part one of the series Let’s Learn English to discuss the words “usual” and “unusual” and the ideas behind them.
