A patient with stroke or paralysis as we have told multiple times, that they have to be taken to the hospital immediately. Why should they be taken immediately?

Stroke or paralysis are terms that all of us use commonly. How do you identify a patient who has a stroke or paralysis attack? Let us see the symptoms first. We call this as F.A.S.T. F stands for facial drooping, A stands for arm weakness or immobility of arm or leg, S stands for slurring of speech and T stands for time.

If you notice any of these three, you should rush the person immediately to the hospital. But which type of hospital should the patient be taken to immediately? A hospital that has the facility to treat stroke patients. You need to go to a hospital that has the experience in treating stroke patients and is recognized for it. The hospital should at least have the facility to take a CT scan or an MRI scan. The doctors there should be a neurologist or a neurosurgeon.

When it comes to scans, why do we do a CT scan or an MRI scan? Stroke can be segregated into two types. One type of stroke is caused due to bleeding and the other type of stroke is caused by the blockage of blood flow. The stroke that is caused by bleeding and the stroke that is caused by blockage of blood flow. To differentiate between the two, a scan has to be taken. CT scan facility is available in many hospitals nowadays.

So when we go to such hospitals in just two minutes a CT scan will give us the details. Why should we be able to identify the two types at the beginning? It is because the treatment given for the two different types of stroke are completely different. If there is bleeding, to stop the bleeding, to reduce the blood pressure, there are a few options including surgery. To find this out, CT or MRI is needed.

Why do we take a CT scan? In most of the hospitals CT scan facility is available nowadays and we will get the information needed in just two minutes. MRI scans can give us a lot more information. But there are not many MRI scan centers. In MRI scan centers there is a stroke protocol.

What does that mean? Normally it takes about 20 minutes to get the result of an MRI scan. In hospitals where the stroke protocol is followed, in just 5 or 6 minutes we will get a lot more information than what we get from a CT scan. If there is a block in a blood vessel, it will be possible to know which blood vessel has the block. Is CT scan better or is MRI scan better?
stroke centers with MRI scan facilities are best.

What are the advantages of the stroke protocol? Is it a stroke caused by bleeding or is it a stroke caused blockage in the blood vessel. Apart from just this information, the location of the blockage in the blood vessel from the neck to the brain is shown clearly in the picture. Why am I giving importance to the block in the neck? I will share that in the next video.
