🏠 Where are the world’s “immigrant nations”?
In some countries, only a small share of the population was born abroad, while in others newcomers make up a big part of society. Using Eurostat for Europe and official statistics elsewhere, we compared the share of foreign-born residents across countries.

🌍 Europe:
Data from Eurostat (as of 1 Jan 2024, i.e. 2023 stocks). It measures the share of residents who were born outside the country, whether in another EU state or further abroad. This is consistent across EU and EFTA members (like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein).

🌏 Non-EU highlights we added

🇦🇺 Australia — 30.7%
Source: ABS (2023, “Australia’s population by country of birth”). Shares of residents born overseas.

🇨🇦 Canada — 23.0%
Source: Statistics Canada (2021 Census). Foreign-born population share.

🇺🇸 United States — 15.8%
Source: Pew / U.S. Census Bureau (2024/25 estimates). Foreign-born share of population.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom — 15.4%
Source: OECD (2023, International Migration Outlook). Foreign-born share.

🇯🇵 Japan — 2.5%
Source: OECD (2023). Closest comparable figure; Japan tracks foreign nationals, but OECD harmonizes to foreign-born where possible.

🇰🇷 South Korea — 3.8%
Source: OECD (2023). Same approach as Japan.

🔎 How we keep this fair:

Europe = Eurostat “foreign-born share” at a fixed reference date.

Outside Europe = official census/ABS/StatCan numbers when available, or OECD harmonized estimates (Japan/Korea).

Years vary slightly by source, so we label them above.
