Thanjavur District, located on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, is known for its rich heritage in water management. The district, with its fertile soil, is one of the largest paddy cultivation areas not only in Tamil Nadu but also in South India. Due to its large extent, two districts were carved out from the composite Thanjavur district for administrative convenience. Nagapattinam district was formed on 19.01.1991 by bifurcating Thanjavur district, which included Thiruvarur, Mayiladudurai, Mannargudi, Nagapattinam divisions, and Valangaiman taluk from Kumbakonam division. In 1997, Nagapattinam district was further divided into Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts for administrative purposes.

The district is bordered by Coloroon to the North, separating it from Ariyalur and Tiruchirapalli districts, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts to the east, Palk Strait and Pudukottai to the South, and Pudukottai and Tiruchirapalli to the West. Thanjavur District covers an area of 3396.57 sq.km and consists of three divisions - Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Pattukottai, and nine taluks. The district headquarters is located in Thanjavur, known as 'The Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu' due to its agricultural activities in the delta region of the River Cauvery. The district is renowned for its temples, culture, and architecture, reflecting the historical influence of rulers such as the Cholas, Nayaks, Marathas, and the British. Monuments like the Grand Anaicut, Big Temple, Sarofoji Mahal, Palace, and Saraswathi Mahal Library are significant landmarks in the district.
