BTC Winter Session Begins Under Tight Security Amid Rising Student Protests

The two-day winter session of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) began on December 1 under an extensive security blanket as massive protests continue across the region over the Assam government’s decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities.

The session commenced under the chairmanship of BTC Speaker Tridip Daimary, beginning with the Question Hour. Key discussions focused on development schemes under the BTC, with representatives from the BPF, BJP, and UPPL taking part in the deliberations. More discussions and policy reviews are expected on the second day of the session.

Tensions escalated sharply on November 29, when thousands of Bodo students, mobilized by the Tribal Students’ Union, launched a large protest march from Bodoland University (Rangalikhata, Debargaon) to the BTC Secretariat in Bodofa Nagar. The demonstrators opposed the government’s decision to extend ST status to six non-tribal communities in Assam, arguing that such a move could severely reduce the rights, political safeguards, and representation of the existing tribal population in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

The protest drew widespread attention as the students’ march continued peacefully but with strong emotions, demanding the state government revoke its decision. Security forces have since intensified monitoring across key locations in Kokrajhar, including the BTC Secretariat, university area, and adjoining localities.

Authorities are continuing to assess the evolving law-and-order situation as the winter session progresses, with public pressure mounting and tribal groups vowing to intensify their agitation if their concerns are not addressed.
