With the festive season in full swing and the country a hive of activity, it seems it is also a busy period for criminals. The Governance, Public Safety, and Justice Survey of 2019–20 by Stats SA revealed that burglaries are still the most common crimes in the country. According to the agency, over a five-year period, housebreaking or home invasions have consistently been the most common crime in South Africa, peaking particularly in June, September, and December. These are all school holiday dates.
Is an increase in crime during the festive season imminent and will darkness, caused by long periods of loadshedding, be a contributing factor?
