The Triumph of Death is an oil panel painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted c. 1562. It has been in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1827.
During the two plagues that swept the continent, clashes between church traditionalists or Catholics and reformers, and religious wars between Spain and Flanders, death was a daily occurrence, familiar to people living at that time.
The Triumph of Death is an impressive reminder to everyone of the inevitability of death. According to Brueghel, Death is the end that leaves no hope - neither for glory, nor for time, nor for eternity.
Within the framework of this painting, the artist turns to two pictorial traditions - the Northern Renaissance engraving on the theme of the Dance of Death, which he was accustomed to, and the Italian concept of the Triumph of Death, which he may have seen on the frescoes of the Palazzo Sclafani (Palermo) and the cemetery of Campo Santo (Pisa).
Many skeletons, helpers of death itself, which sits on a bony horse, storm the Earth against the backdrop of a barren landscape and terrifying scenes of destruction Earth - in the glow of fires. It is littered with pillars with torture wheels and gallows. On the very line of the horizon, you can see the shallow sea with sinking ships. The high horizon line made it possible for the artist to expand on a grand scale an ominous picture of what is happening below - on earth.
It makes no sense to draw a sword in their face, or escape from them under the table, or ignore them, playing cards or singing serenades, the messengers of death will get to you anyway. Neither the king, nor the slave, nor the righteous, nor the sinner will escape death - everyone is equal before her face. The distraught people seek to hide, but, without noticing it themselves, they run into a trap in the form of a coffin. The world perishes to the sound of bells swaying by skeletons on the left side of the Triumph of Death.
The abundance of elements in the painting reflects many aspects of everyday life in the 16th century, from details of clothing to popular pastimes such as playing cards and backgammon. The artist included in the image some musical instruments, an old mechanical clock, a hunting scene, a funeral rite.
This painting belonged to Queen Elizabeth of Farnese and in 1745 was in the royal summer residence of La Granja.
