Teachers need to be supported as they attempt to address the diverse learning needs of children.
Teacher continuous professional development programmes is important as it brings about teacher
change through change in attitudes and beliefs which in turn impacts the practice and further
improves the student learning. Teacher continuous professional development in India is through
the cascade mode which does not address the contextual challenges and does not take into
consideration the teacher agency. Teacher professional development needs to be implemented
through taking into consideration the personal domain of teachers, the practice domain, the
consequences/outcome domain and the external domain. School heads/principals also have an
important role to play in teacher continuous professional development.
