箱根登山線前面展望　小田原→塔ノ沢＜Cabview Japanrail Hakone Tozan Line Odawara → Tounosawa＞

The Hakone Tozan Railway is a 15.0 km line between Odawara and Gora. Odakyu Electric Railway trains run on the line up to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where the tracks connect at Odawara Station, and Odakyu express trains run from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto.

This 15 km section was originally built by the Hakone Tozan Railway, but Odakyu trains now run on the line up to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where the slope is relatively gentle. The Hakone Tozan Line's trains are 1435mm gauge and 750V electrified, while Odakyu's trains are 1067mm and 1500V electrified, and they are compatible with two different standards. The Hakone Tozan Line's trains are dual-voltage trains, and between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto, where Hakone Tozan's depot is located, and Iryuda Station, where Hakone-Yumoto Station is located, both 1435mm gauge and 1067mm gauge tracks are laid, making it a "dual gauge" system. In the past, the line was dual gauge up to Odawara, but now all trains between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto are operated by Odakyu trains, and dual gauge is only available in one section.

From Hakone-Yumoto Station onwards, the line becomes a full-fledged mountain line with an 80‰ gradient, and Odakyu trains cannot run on it. This section is only operated by Hakone Tozan Railway's small trains, which are good at dealing with gradients and sharp curves.
