And this UNESCO world heritage site is situated in the Indian state of Tripura. It is famous for its rock-cut sculptures and carvings, which are estimated to be around 1000 years old. The name "Unakoti" means "one less than a crore" in Bengali and refers to the legend that there are one less than ten million (one crore) rock-cut sculptures at the site. The sculptures at Unakoti are believed to have been created between the 7th and 9th centuries CE during the rule of the Kachari kingdom. The site is home to a large number of rock-cut images of Hindu gods and goddesses, including Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Durga. The most famous sculpture at Unakoti is a 30-foot-tall image of Lord Shiva's face, which is carved into a rock face.
These massive rock carvings have unique features similar to those found in Cambodia's famous Angkor Wat temple. That's why it's called the Angkor Wat of the Northeast.
