Greek Mythology Family Tree Explained. The three generations of gods and goddesses, from the primordial deities to the Olympians. Discover the stories, relationships, and powers of these ancient beings, and how they influenced the culture and literature of Greece and beyond.
The Greek mythology family tree is divided into three main branches: the primordial gods, the Titans, and the Olympians. The primordial gods are the first and oldest entities. They include Eros, Tartarus, Gaia, Erebus, and Nyx, and their various offspring, such as the Cyclops, the monsters, and the Titans.
The Titans are the second generation of gods, born from Gaia and Uranus, the earth and the sky. They include Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Thea, Crius, and Cronus, among others. Cronus, the leader of the Titans, feared a prophecy that stated he would be overthrown by one of his children, so he swallowed them all, except for Zeus, who was hidden by his mother Rhea. Zeus grew up and freed his siblings, and led a war against the Titans, known as the Titanomachy. He and his allies emerged victorious, and banished the Titans to Tartarus, a dark abyss.
Zeus, along with his brothers Poseidon and Hades, and his sisters Demeter, Hera, and Hestia, became the main Olympian gods, named after Mount Olympus, their home. They are the third and most popular generation of gods, and they have many children and consorts, such as Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hermes, Hephaestus ,etc
