HOW TO PAINT A DOG PORTRAIT/ American Bulldog- Suzanne Barrett Justis

In this time lapsed painting demonstration tutorial, I will show my painting process of a dog portrait, an American Bulldog named George. In the beginning I use an acrylic basecoat or grounding to my 24 x 24 stretched canvas. Once dry, I draw vine charcoal sketch of the Bulldog prior to oil paint application. Watch as block George in, laying from dark cool colors up to the lightest and warmest colors last. You will learn how to paint a dog portrait with oil paint, step by step. You will learn to paint realistic fur by mounding your color along the folds of skin and understanding the topography of the dog's face. Understanding how to manipulate color and value and understanding basic structure of the dog will help you create a realistic pet portrait. Even thought this portrait is in oils, a lot of these same techniques can be applied to painting pet portraits in acrylic paint as well.

From the time I got this Holiday Commission of George, the American Bulldog...I wanted to paint him. It was that "stink eye" of George that pulled me in. What a fun time I had painting this dog in oils.

Follow or paint along and learn my painting process of this original artwork. one of the brush I used for the most was a Synthetic Shiraz pointed round or rigger, as well as two filberts, the number 5 and 8, I will also leave you the link to the brush here. It is a very versatile brush, and you can see that if was able to do everything I asked of it in this painting tutorial

I also used several of the Eclipse long Filberts of various sizes, you can find them here

and Ivory long filberts, my " work horse brush" I love them.
