History on the Union Pacific Big Boy:
•The Big Boy was an articulated steam locomotive that was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCo) in Schenectady, New York.
•The Big Boy class was originally going to be known as Wasatches (named after the Wasatch Mountains in Utah) but when the prototype (UP 4000) was built, an ALCo workman chalked the words “BIG BOY” on the smoke box door, and the name stuck.
•There were two batches of Big Boys built: The first batch (4000-4019) was built in 1941, and the second batch (4020-4024) was built in 1944.
•The Big Boy measures 133 feet long from coupler to coupler.
•The Big Boy has a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement (four guiding wheels, two sets of eight driving wheels, and four trailing wheels).
•Out of the 25 Big Boys built for the Union Pacific, only eight survive today.
•The surviving Big Boys are UP 4004 (Holiday Park, Cheyenne, Wyoming), UP 4005 (Forney Transportation Museum, Denver, Colorado), UP 4006 (St. Louis, Missouri), UP 4012 (Steamtown USA, Scranton, Pennsylvania), UP 4014 (Undergoing Restoration by the Union Pacific in Cheyenne, Wyoming), UP 4017 (National Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin), UP 4018 (Texas), and UP 4023 (Omaha, Nebraska).
