이번에 소개해 드릴 여행지는 강원도 태백 가볼만한 곳이자 일년 중 지금 이 시기에만 볼 수 있는 해바라기축제와 바람의 언덕 고랭지배추밭입니다. 보통 가을에 피는 꽃으로 인식되던 해바라기가 차츰 여름 꽃으로 자리 잡아 가는 추세입니다. 온통 녹음으로 짙은 한여름에 화려한 색감으로 눈길을 잡을 만한 꽃이 많지 않으니 파종 시기를 조금 앞당겨 여행객을 유혹하는 일종의 틈새 공략입니다. 태백 구와우마을이 대표적입니다. 2005년 국내 최초로 해바라기 축제를 시작한 구와우마을은 아홉 마리 소가 배불리 먹고 누워 있는 형상이라는 의미를 담고 있습니다. 그 뜻만 보면 풍성하고 너른 들판일 것 같은데, 실제 해바라기를 심은 곳은 해발 800m 부근 산자락입니다. 골짜기로 길쭉하게 파고든 밭을 가운데 두고 양쪽으로 산줄기가 이어집니다. 해바라기 사이사이에 아름드리 버드나무가 그늘을 드리웠고, 해마다 갯수를 더해 가는 설치미술 작품이 색다른 포토존을 형성하고 있습니다. 잎갈나무를 주종으로 하는 울창한 숲속에는 산책로와 쉼터를 조성했습니다. 함백산, 금대봉, 대덕산 등 해발 1,400~1,500m에 이르는 우람한 산줄기가 감싸고 있어 한여름에도 무더위 걱정 없이 꽃밭을 누빌 수 있다는 게 이곳의 최대 매력입니다. 해바라기를 심기 전 구와우는 고랭지 채소를 기르는 농지였습니다. 태백은 아이들이 개천을 검게 그리는 광산도시였고 탄광이 하나둘 문을 닫으면서 이 잿빛 도시를 노란색으로 화사하게 물들여 보자는 생각으로 해바라기를 선택했다고 합니다. 그리고 태백이 우리나라에서 가장 시원한 곳이라서 이왕이면 그런 점을 알리기 위해 여름휴가 기간에 꽃이 피도록 파종 시기를 조절했다고 합니다. 올해 축제는 7월 22일 시작해 8월 15일까지 계속됩니다. 지난 2년 동안 코로나19로 축제를 열지 못한 것을 보상이라도 하려는 듯, 올해는 최근 6년 이래 꽃이 가장 풍성하고 예쁘게 피었다고 합니다. 여행사에서 문의가 많아 축제를 일주일 더 연장하기로 했습니다. 씨앗이 여물 때까지 놔두기 때문에 축제가 끝나도 꽃은 볼 수 있을 겁니다. 수확한 씨앗은 잘 보관했다가 내년 축제 때 기름을 짜서 판매할 예정입니다. Before planting sunflowers, Guwau was a farmland where highland vegetables were grown. It was a mining city where children who lived in Taebaek drew a stream black because of coal, and as coal mines closed one by one, they chose sunflowers with the idea of turning this gray city into yellow. And Taebaek is the coolest place in Korea, so it is said that the sowing time was adjusted to bloom during the summer vacation to promote such a cool point. This year's festival starts on July 22 and runs until August 15. 해바라기 축제장인 구와우마을 인근에 있는 해발 1,303m 매봉산 풍력발전단지는 바람의 언덕이란 별명으로 더 유명한데 바람이 많이 불고 언덕 위에 풍력발전기가 있어 이 같은 별명이 붙은 것이라고 합니다. 바람의 언덕에서는 일출과 운해를 만나볼 수 있는 곳으로 유명하며, 고랭지 배추가 넓은 대지 위에 푸르게 자라나면 장관인 곳입니다. 하늘과 맞닿을 듯한 매봉산 정상에서부터 약 40만평 규모의 고랭지 배추밭이 펼쳐지고, 8월에 출하되어 전국 곳곳 여러분들의 식탁에 올려진다고 합니다.Maebongsan Wind Power Complex, located near Guwau Village, a sunflower festival site, is more famous for its nickname of Wind Hill, which is said to have been given this nickname because it is windy and has a wind generator on the hill.
