The Natural Resources Conservation Service worked with the Prairie Island Indian Community to construct an erosion control structure in Olmsted County, Minnesota. A large amount of sediment from agricultural run-off had been emptying into a barrow pit near highway 52. This resulted in severe gully erosion, bank erosion, and possible water quality concerns in the area. The erosion control structure was an EQIP project designed by Tom Broth of the NRCS to handle runoff from the 800-acre watershed leading down into the barrow pit. A step-down rock shoots and grass waterways design approach was used in the project. Approximately 21,000 cubic yards of soil were moved and 2,300 cubic yards of limestone rock was placed in the 3 shoots. Gabe Miller, Environmental Program Manager, Prairie Island Indian Community explains how native grasses and cover crops were planted in the 4 waterways. And buffer strips with native pollinator plants were planted along the sides of the spillway. Videography by Dan Balluff.
