Septicemia (Blood Poisoning) Overview

Cause:

Septicemia is a serious bloodstream infection caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses entering the blood. Common sources include infections in the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, or skin. Risk factors include weakened immunity, recent surgery, or invasive devices like catheters.


Symptoms:

High fever, chills, and rapid breathing.

Low blood pressure and increased heart rate.

Confusion, fatigue, and reduced urine output in severe cases.

Skin changes like pale or mottled appearance.

Laboratory Findings:

Blood cultures to identify the causative organism.

Elevated inflammatory markers such as CRP or procalcitonin.
