Through the construction at Lot 32, It has become apparent that I could greatly benefit from a more affordable mode of transportation. I need the big Ford, because it will be the water truck, I need the Rig because it is home, office and business, but it is simply too expensive to drive them to town if I don't need to pick up supplies. Having rode dirt bikes and motorbikes my whole life, the addition of an Adventure bike to the fleet was an inevitability, and this seemed like the right time to get the ball rolling.

I am starting with a KLR, because I think it is a great learner bike to get the hang of a taller heavier bike. As well, they are cost effective, reliable, internationally available and they cause much less pain to the ego when you crash them. Unfortunately I had the displeasure of learning this first hand. Crashing, fixing and learning aside, I got this bike for the adventure potential, and it's time to start taking her on some trips.

Right from my driveway, there is a seemingly endless number of routes and loops, perfectly suited for an adventure bike, many of which traveling through areas of rich history. Todays loop is a great example of exactly this. With almost no time on the pavement, I spent the entire day enjoying this great big circle loop. Remarkably, much of this loop was new to me, but I have been interested in it for years, especially after the tailings pond disaster. This was huge news locally, and even spread internationally, but for years access to the spill location was closed. As the years went by, it seems that the breach had become less and less discussed, and as the regrowth comes back it hardly looks unnatural. Knowing what this area once looked like however, seeing it stripped right down to the bedrock is quite the devastating sight. Never the less, it is still possible to find some joy in a terrible event like this, because the geology that has been revealed from this spill is something that would never otherwise be possible to see.

This route has an alarming number of abandoned homes and businesses, and I can only guess that their demise stems simply from their location. Beautiful remote places are a big draw to folks such as myself, but for the average tourist, the inconvenience on access is just too strong of a deterrent.

Weather you're on a bike, in a Rig or driving a car, a visit to the towns of Likely and Horsefly will be a detour you will never regret.
