Let's Talk About Moldavite

This week we are kicking off with one of the most popular tektites: Moldavite

Other Names – Bouteille Stone and Vltavín

Geological Information:
Moldavite is composed of silica-rich glass that is most commonly understood to be a deep green tektite. Tektites are a result of the blowout from the impact of a meteorite with earth’s surface. Its raw appearance has a wrinkled exterior and is transparent when held up to a source of light. On the Moh Hardness scale it ranges from 5 to 5.5, meaning it is able to be scratched by a blade or a glass shard. It is considered amorphous, meaning lacking in structure, and considered a mineraloid as it is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid but lacks a crystal structure. This is due to its formation being so quick when entering the atmosphere, the atoms could not form into a proper mineral.

Historical Information:
Around 15 million years ago a meteorite was theorized to have broken in two, colliding into the earth and creating two craters. These sites are now known as the Ries and Steinheim craters, located in southeaster Germany. The impact was so great it strewn pieces of Moldavite across to Austria and the Czech Republic as well. Surprisingly enough, this wasn’t the only thing left behind. 80,000 tons of diamonds were found as well as a result of this collision. This was due to the graphite deposit being consumed as well, the incredible heat and pressure transforming the minerals to diamonds all smaller than 0.2 millimeters.

Moldavite is thought to help with spiritual evolution and self-discovery, and to establish a connection between the cosmos and awareness. It is also highly regarded as an extremely powerful transformative stone in mind, body, and spirit. With the history of its formation and its ability to shield from negative forces, it is said to make rapid change for the better. This is not a beginner stone for the metaphysical realm as it is highly vibrational and often revered for its ability to greatly accelerate spiritual growth and evolution. Many believe it has an innate ability to manifest desires and intentions into reality and aligns the mind, body, and spirit in one.
