The History of Banknotes in Nepal

The history of banknotes in Nepal dates back to the early 20th century. Initially, in 1945 (B.S. 2002), the Sadar Muluki Khana (Treasury) issued the first banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, and 100 rupees. These early notes were signed by the treasurers Janakaraj and Nandnaraj.

Later, in 1955 (B.S. 2012), the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) was established and took over the responsibility of issuing banknotes. The NRB introduced a series of notes with various denominations over the years, featuring signatures of different governors. The first notes issued by NRB included denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 100 rupees in 1959 (B.S. 2016).

Throughout the decades, NRB continued to introduce new denominations and designs, including significant releases like the 1000 rupee note in 1962 (B.S. 2019) and the 10 rupee polymer note in 2009 (B.S. 2066). These notes often featured images reflecting Nepalese culture and heritage, as well as the signatures of successive governors.

नेपालमा बैंकनोटको इतिहास २०औं शताब्दीको सुरुदेखि सुरु भएको हो। प्रारम्भमा, वि.सं. २००२ मा, सदर मुलुकी खाना (खजाना) ले पहिलोपटक ५, १०, र १०० रुपैयाँका दरका बैंकनोट जारी गरेको थियो। यी प्रारम्भिक नोटहरू जनकराज र नन्दनराजद्वारा हस्ताक्षरित थिए।

पछि, वि.सं. २०१२ मा, नेपाल राष्ट्र बैंक (NRB) स्थापना भयो र बैंकनोट जारी गर्ने जिम्मेवारी लिए। NRB ले विभिन्न समयहरूमा विभिन्न दरका नोटहरू जारी गर्‍यो, जसमा विभिन्न गर्भनरहरूको हस्ताक्षर समावेश थियो। NRB द्वारा जारी पहिलो नोटहरूमा वि.सं. २०१६ मा १, ५, १०, र १०० रुपैयाँका दरका नोटहरू थिए।

दशकौंको अवधिमा, NRB ले नयाँ दरका र डिजाइनका नोटहरू जारी गर्न जारी राख्यो, जसमा १९६२ (वि.सं. २०१९) मा १००० रुपैयाँको नोट र २००९ (वि.सं. २०६६) मा १० रुपैयाँको पॉलिमर नोट जस्ता महत्त्वपूर्ण जारीहरू समावेश थिए। यी नोटहरूले प्रायः नेपाली संस्कृति र सम्पदालाई प्रतिबिम्बित गर्ने छविहरू र क्रमशः गर्भनरहरूको हस्ताक्षर समावेश गर्थे।
