Reinhard Heydrich was known by many names during his brief but horrifying career in Nazi Germany: the Blond Beast, the Hangman, the Butcher of Prague, and most chillingly, the Man with the Iron Heart. He was one of the principal architects of the Holocaust, the head of the Reich Security Main Office which controlled the Gestapo and SS intelligence services, the chief organizer of the Wannsee Conference where the Final Solution was coordinated, and the Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia where his brutal rule terrorized the Czech population. Heinrich Himmler, his superior and the head of the SS, called Heydrich the most dangerous man in the Third Reich. Yet despite his central role in the machinery of genocide and terror, Heydrich remains somewhat mysterious, a figure of cold efficiency and calculated cruelty whose daily activities and working methods are less documented than those of more prominent Nazis.

So what did Reinhard Heydrich actually do all day? How did this architect of mass murder spend his working hours? What were the routines and activities through which he exercised his terrible power? Today we’ll reconstruct the daily life of Reinhard Heydrich during the height of his power from 1939 to 1942, examining his schedules, his methods, and the mundane administrative work through which he organized persecution and genocide. This is a story about the intersection of bureaucratic efficiency and absolute evil, about how a talented administrator and ambitious careerist became one of history’s most effective mass murderers, and about how genocide was implemented through meetings, memoranda, and administrative decisions made during working hours that in their form resembled those of any government official. We’ll explore Heydrich’s rise to power, his multiple overlapping responsibilities, his daily routines in Berlin and Prague, and ultimately the assassination that ended his life at age 38.
