6. Climate activist Vanessa Nakate arriving for an interview
ANNOTATION: Climate activist Vanessa Nakate urged delegates at the summit to put the people first instead of profits and cancel debt owed by vulnerable countries.
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Vanessa Nakate, climate activist:
"In that moment I really wanted our leaders to have a certain kind of reflection and ponder also on the impacts of the climate crisis. It is one thing for us to talk about statistics, to talk about numbers. But it is not statistics that are starving in the Horn of Africa. It is people, children, women. So for me in that moment I just wanted them to understand the urgency of the crisis and how much it is costing lives but it is forcing children out of school, forcing girls into early marriages, leading to displacement of people, destruction of livelihoods. So I just wanted them to carry that reflection in their hearts and understand the urgency of the crisis."

ANNOTATION: She says the conference in Paris will be successful if goals are accomplished not just talked about.

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Vanessa Nakate, climate activist:
“I mean if it's the start of something and we don't see what we really want to see by the end of the summit, I think we still have that room to hold leaders accountable because if you brought an initiative, if you have read a statement or given a commitment, it doesn't come to fulfillment than we have to hold you accountable for that. STORYLINE:
Climate activists gathered in central Paris on Friday calling for the implementation of a polluter-pay principle as the second day of a climate and finance summit was held in the French capital.

Fearing the talks won’t meet expectations, demonstrators - joined by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg - turned over placards on the ground, revealing three US Dollar signs turning from black to green.

Climate activist Vanessa Nakate faced an audience packed with world leaders and finance officials on Thursday, silenced the room and made everyone listen to some uncomfortable facts.

Nakate told the AP that this conference in Paris will be successful if goals are accomplished, not just talked about.
