In 1931, Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his Variations on a Theme of Corelli. He was widely regarded as the leading pianist of his time and one of the most gifted composers for the instrument. Nevertheless, he had publish nothing for the piano in 16 years and this was to be his last work for the instrument which he had played with such mastery from childhood and which had sustained him in exile through long periods of silence as a composer. Although he called the work "Variations on a Theme of Corelli", the melody in fact began life much earlier, as a Portuguese folk dance known as “La Folia”.
