The Mercedes-Benz Unimog U4023 is world-renowned for its off-road capabilities thanks to its flexible ladder-frame design, portable hub axles, powerful engines and cutting-edge technology. We put it to the test on the snow and ice at 2,800 metres in the Austrian Alps.
At its heart, this Unimog is the ideal workhorse and hauling machine for the most difficult conditions. Its extreme off-road ruggedness results from a range of technical developments, including all-wheel-drive with differential locks in both axles and inherent, all-round, automatic Central Tyre Control.
The frame design of the Unimog U4023 range is not just unique, it is unparalleled worldwide. The flexible ladder-type frame with tubular cross members ensures rigidity when needed and great torsional flexibility off-road. Even at an articulation of 30º, the Unimog retains its ability to provide safe and controlled driving.
Portal axles provide outstanding ground clearance, so deep potholes or obstacles up to 50 cm high are no problem for the Unimog, and the centre of gravity stays low.
This Unimog U4023 is driven by low-maintenance 5.1-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine, producing 231hp and 900Nm, which provides the drive to tackle the most difficult terrain and conditions. Engine emissions are also kept environmentally friendly through the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
It takes all-terrain operations to extremes. Where other vehicles fear to tread – or simply stay in the depot – the all-terrain Unimog will tackle deep snow or extreme cross-country, flooded roads or parched and unstable moorland. It will climb gradients of up to 100% – and still carry men and the tools, equipment and attachments required to complete the job.
Meanwhile, the thrust tube technology and air intake pipe at cab roof height allows the Unimog to wade comfortably in up to 80cm water, and there is an optional ‘fording package’ with pressurised and sealed components, which increases the depth to 1.20 metres.
