Philosophy: What is the Meaning of Life?
The question of life’s meaning has fascinated thinkers for centuries. From existentialism to spirituality, every school of thought offers unique answers. Existentialism suggests that life has no pre-given purpose; rather, it is we who must create meaning through choices and authenticity. Jean-Paul Sartre argued that “existence precedes essence,” meaning we are free but also burdened with responsibility. Dr. Vikas Divyakirti often explains in simple terms that meaning emerges not from external definitions, but from how sincerely we live our own truth.
Nihilism, on the other hand, claims that life has no inherent meaning at all. Thinkers like Nietzsche described this as both a danger and an opportunity. When traditional values collapse, one may feel emptiness, but also gain the freedom to build new values. Osho Rajneesh embraced this idea, teaching that instead of fearing meaninglessness, we should celebrate it, because only then can we live playfully, without rigid boundaries.
Stoicism offers a practical answer: meaning comes from living in harmony with nature, practicing virtue, and accepting what we cannot control. The Stoics remind us that life’s trials are not obstacles but opportunities to grow in wisdom. This aligns with Acharya Prashant’s teachings, who emphasizes self-awareness, detachment from desires, and focusing on inner freedom rather than outer achievements.
Spirituality takes the question deeper, suggesting that life’s true meaning is to realize our connection with the divine or universal consciousness. Osho speaks of life as a celebration of awareness; Acharya Prashant highlights stillness and truth as the essence of living meaningfully.
Thus, whether through existential freedom, stoic discipline, or spiritual awakening, the meaning of life is not a fixed answer—it is a journey of self-discovery, responsibility, and awareness.
