Earth’s polar ice sheets are melting faster than ever — and satellites are watching it happen.

In this video, we explain how NASA’s ICESat-2 satellite measures the height of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, where the biggest changes are happening, and why warmer ocean water is causing massive amounts of ice to break off and melt.

According to ICESat-2 data, melting ice from Greenland and Antarctica is adding enough water every second to fill four Olympic-size swimming pools. Over the last 20 years, this melting has already raised global sea levels by about half an inch.
