USING HEADPHONES WHILE EXERCISING/RUNNING- NOT A GOOD IDEA
It is a common sight to see joggers and cyclists and our fellow fitness enthusiasts putting on headphones and listening to their favourite music while jogging or exercising.
This may not be such a good idea. Apart from losing concentration, the main anatomical and physiological reason is that the ear as an organ is responsible for two important functions- Hearing and Balance.
Yes, half the ear is dedicated to the delicate task of maintaining balance in the body- it is the most important organ where impulses are received from the rest of the body, including the eyes, the neck and the rest of the body.
Being housed inside the same casing as the organ of hearing, there are cross connections between the two – listening to loud music is known to adversely affect our balance.
The problems with listening to loud music while exercising are many-
1. Risk of accidents – specially in India where traffic conditions are amongst the worst in the world and where pedestrians, joggers and cyclists are treated with complete disregard it is important for those on the roads/ streets to be able to hear clearly. Any music or loud sound in the ear will reduce our awareness of traffic around us and make us more prone to accidents.
2. Delayed Reaction Time: Without auditory input from your environment, your brain takes longer to react to visual cues alone. This can be the difference between stepping aside safely and a potentially life-threatening incident.
3. False Sense of Safety : Even at lower volumes we can meet up with accidents.
4. Zoning out while exercising – my time with myself is lost if you listen to loud music on your headphones. The reflective nature of your workout is lost.
5. Losing touch with nature – the sound of birds, peacocks, rustle of leaves in the wind – all that is lost.
Still want to use your headphones? Use these tips
• Use One Earbud: at least one ear will hear sounds
• Keep Volume Low: sound should be such that if someone calls you from behind you should be able to hear.
• Avoid ‘accident-prone’ areas
• Awareness is more important than entertainment
