Safe water flows again for families in Liubar

Six-year-old Zakhar, the oldest child in his kindergarten in the village of Liubar, in Ukraine’s Zhytomyrska region, sits up at his desk with a broad smile. Full of energy, he is quick to answer his teacher’s question about water.

“We need water to drink and to wash our hands,” Zakhar says confidently, before adding: “And to wash the car!”

“The situation with the water in our kindergarten was terrible,” says Yulia Prokudina, a methodologist. “The building dates back to 1986, so things constantly break down. The water system was no exception – either there was no water, or it was of such poor quality that the kindergarten couldn’t operate properly.”

In response, UNICEF, with funding from the Belgian Government, provided 1,500 metres of plastic piping to help the Liubar community restore its water supply. Some critical repairs have now been completed, and the water here finally meets hygiene standards – there are no more leaks, no more burst pipes. But there is still work to be done, with the next major task set to be repairs to the village’s sewer system.
