IO-Link technology is commonly discussed. But what is IO-Link? How does it work? And what is the basis for its wide-spread application?
IO-Link is a communication technology which connects sensors and actuators to a networked industrial environment.
Just like a 4-20 mA signal, it is also a point-to-point connection. IO-Link is not only used to communicate measured values, it also acquires and transfers additional sensor data. To ensure compatibility, all IO-Link products use an identical connection and a standardised communication protocol. Simple, binary switching instruments can also be connected.

Connection to a controller is made via the IO-Link master. Each instrument can be easily identified through a unique description file called IODD, which includes details on the instrument and its functions. Readings and changes of these details can be done, in the instrument, via the IO-Link master.
IO-Link instruments can be operated both in traditional switch mode and in IO-Link mode.
In IO-Link mode, the measured values are transferred by the instruments at a selectable time interval.
IO-Link offers incontestable advantages for all industrial applications.
