The Hobbit - Bilbos Speech - Why did you come back?
Thorin Gandalf and company escape off and out of the mountain only to find Bilbo is not with them. To their surprise moments later, after Thorin says he knew he would run, to the joy of many in the company, some wondering how he escaped (not yet knowing about the ring). Thorin asks Bilbo why he came back. Biblo replying that he thinks of his home because that's where I belong, and that is why he decided to come back, because they don't have one.

Finding the ring is a BIG turning point in Bilbo's fortunes and bravery.
This is also in the scene a point where the dwarves begin to respect the Hobbit far more, and becomes a stronger character, the ring sort of helps that. Gandalf is right to bring him along after all. :)
