39,470 people died from firearms in 2018. Most firearm related deaths are suicides followed by homicides. Legal intervention and accidents are relatively rare while mass shootings are a statistical outlier. The number of mass shootings and homicides has been on the rise in recent years all the while talks of reform have faltered. Both parties appear to be stuck in their respective positions on gun control. Lobbying groups like the National Rifle Association and Everytown for Gun Safety spend tens of millions each election cycle supporting candidates on their side of the gun debate.
The causes of firearm deaths are complex with conflicting research completed by competing interest groups. To make matters worse, Congress passed a bill in 1996 making it illegal for the Centers for Disease Control to use its funding on research that would promote or demote gun control efforts. From what we do know, socioeconomic status, mental health, gun laws, and firearm training all impact firearm suicide and homicide rates.
There are also issues regarding police response times, the right to self-defense, rural versus urban concerns, mass shootings, traditions, and the Second Amendment. Some of these concerns are incredibly contentious since they’re based on philosophy. Meaningful reform in either direction is generally considered dead on arrival without single party control of Washington. Any proposal that makes it through the partisan gridlock would be met with the reality that American’s own almost 400 million firearms. That said, there may be a middle ground on some issues.
