Group 7 elements are known as halogens. They are in group 7 so have 7 electrons in their outer shell. Halogens can form diatomic molecules which are two atoms covalently bonded together. When halogens are diatomic molecules, they have relatively low melting and boiling points, are poor conductors of heat and electricity and can be solid, liquid or gas at room temperature. Both melting and boiling points, as well as density, increase going down the group.
