How can an ADCP tell you which direction a wave is traveling in? The answer lies beneath the surface.

As a wave moves past a point, it creates local currents below the surface of the water, creating what is referred to as the wave's "orbital velocity." These orbital velocities can be felt not just at the surface, but propagate down into the water column, becoming less and less strong with depth.
