BOSTON PARISH #2: OLD LEAKE

Old Leake – “Brook”

We continue Southwards through Boston this week as we enter a place whose name we have met before – albeit in Nottinghamshire. Last time we encountered a Leake was back in Rushcliffe, when we took a short walk around the parish of West Leake. Both the names of that, and this share the same meaning – a leake is a “Brook”.

Old Leake is split into various settlements. The main village sits just North of the A52, and it contains more than its fair share of interesting landmarks. These include a water tower, a secondary school, a pub and a church. However you can’t simply consider Old Leake village to be the be all and end all here. To the North is Leake Commonside – a separate village with its own identity, and its own pub to boot.

North and West of that is Lade Bank, a series of scattered hamlets which once included a railway station. Lade Bank has what I believe to be one of the best landmarks in Boston too – a massive Victorian pumping station which sits above Hobhole Drain. That’s perhaps one of the most important features in the fens, and in this video we’ll learn why. Old Leake parish also includes some more scattered hamlets like The Gride and Leake Hurn’s End, and you could so easily get lost within these narrow country tracks, windy lanes and bumpy drove.
