A US immigration court has dismissed deportation proceedings against Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish PhD student at Tufts University. Ozturk was detained by ICE in Massachusetts last year, in relation to her pro-Palestinian activism.

Her lawyers said the Department of Homeland Security did not meet the legal threshold to establish that she was subject to removal, leading the court to end the case.

On 25 March, masked federal agents stopped and restrained her after the State Department revoked her student visa. The move followed an opinion piece she co-wrote in the Tufts Daily in March 2024, where she urged the university to cut ties with Israel over its treatment of Palestinians.

The decision follows news that Leqaa Kordia, the only Columbia University protester still being held by ICE, was taken to hospital after suffering a seizure.
