Marvin Bagley Is SAVING His Career With The Wizards...

When the Pistons and Wizards made a trade last week that sent Marvin Bagley, Isaiah Livers and two second round picks to Washington and Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscla to Detroit, most people brushed it off as a trade without much impact. It was essentially a salary dump by Detroit, to get off Bagley’s deal and free up cap space for the summer. But early on, it looks like more than just taking on money for the Wizards, as Bagley has really excelled through his first two games with the team. He’s averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game in two starts for the Wizards at center. He’s also shot a very solid 51.4% from the field. He looks much different from the guy that was barely getting any play time in Detroit, and just looks like another blunder for Pistons coach Monty Williams. Not only did the Pistons give up two seconds to acquire Bagley, and then attach another two seconds to get rid of him, they did it in a deal where it seems he was the best player. The Wizards have lost both games with Bagley, but that’s not necessarily an indictment on him, the team has been doing that all season. They did almost take down the Knicks in what would have been a shocking upset in his debut, and then hung with the Spurs last night despite another great Wemby performance. Bagley is playing well, and I’d say his impact with the team so far has been overwhelmingly positive. The Wizards have been without regular starting center Daniel Gafford, who is one of the more underrated bigs in the league today, so we’ll see how things change when he returns, but so far so good for Bagley in DC. He was drafted second overall in 2018 by the Sacramento Kings, and the three subsequent selections were notably Luka Doncic, Jaren Jackson Jr, and Trae Young. That includes two point guards who have started in the all-star game, and the reigning defensive player of the year. He played just three and a half seasons with the Kings, and then they gave up and traded him away, admitting they didn’t think he was the star big man they expected. He started only 10 games in his first two seasons combined. He spent the last two years in Detroit, and played well enough upon arriving to earn a nice contract, but was only given 18 minutes per game by coach Monty this season. In contrast with Washington, he has averaged 37.5 minutes per game so far, and the team seems to really value what he can do. He’s making the most of what could have been his last chance to prove himself. MArvin Bagley is SAVING His Career with the Wizards.
