------ Has your person with dementia refused something that they clearly needed help with?

Yeah, me too. I haven’t talked a lot about my own family’s experience with dementia but it is one of the reasons I went into dementia education and a good example of how dementia doesn’t always mean just memory loss.

My grandma was a strong texas lady and had an iron will to do things her way. Usually, the plan was to just let things go but at a certain point in her dementia journey she became incontinent and her apartment started to reek urine.

I think we all know where this is going. My mom, aunt, uncle basically everyone tried to convince her to please let home health in to clean her or them clean the apartment because it reeked of urine and of course my grandma shut everyone down and refused to let any home health care workers in to help.

I’m sure you’re wondering, how did your family overcome this?

No, we didn’t have a come to Jesus moment with her. She eventually passed peacefully in her sleep still being mad at the home healthcare workers.

What we did was align the home healthcare workers with what she wanted which was to avoid moving from independent living to assisted living at all costs and avoid us getting into trouble with adult protective services.

So for the rest of her days she would still complain to me over the phone how unfair and unneeded it was to have home health come in and bath her and clean her apartment but at least she started to let them in and do so.

You gotta take the wins where you can.

I am sharing tips for some of the most common challenging dementia behaviors leading up to a BIG announcement on September 11th!

Comment “refuse” if you’ve gone through something similar.
