The Reserve Bank of India is set to bring major relief to borrowers with new guidelines aimed at curbing harassment by banks and recovery agents. Under the proposed framework, recovery calls will not be allowed after 7 PM, agents can only contact the borrower or guarantor, and visits or calls cannot occur during sensitive occasions such as bereavements, weddings, or festivals. Recovery agents will require mandatory certification, proper training, and must follow ethical conduct standards. The RBI is also introducing structured grievance redressal systems to ensure borrowers can report harassment effectively. These rules, effective from July 1, 2026, will apply across commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, regional rural banks, and local area banks, marking a shift toward fair, respectful, and humane loan recovery practices.
